Meme Question: Describe yourself

Song 1: Let Me Be the One – Quiet Riot
Inspiration: The theme of the song, which is pretty much in the title as well!
Word Count: 130

She looked at him longingly. Just ask me, she pleaded silently. I know the answer, I can help you! And once we work together, you’ll see how wonderful I am and you’ll start hanging out with me, and then…

Her daydream was cut short when his phone chimed softly, and he answered it. “Yeah, I think I’ve pretended to study long enough, do you have the essay? Cool. I’ll be over in ten.” He closed his book and packed up his backpack, strutting out of the school library and off to football practice. She sighed, and went back to her calculus homework, her brow furrowing at a particularly tricky problem.

At the next table, a slight boy stared at her, trying to telegraph the notion to just ask his help…

Song 2: Thick as a Brick – Jethro Tull
Inspiration: Song Title
Word Count: 192

“Seriously, I can be a thick as two short planks at times,” Louise murmured to herself as she deleted a piece of code, hopefully the garbage that was causing it to hang up while compiling. Her office mate looked up and grinned.

“That must be a Brit expression,” James said. “I’ve not heard it around here.”

“No? Well, I’m sure you’ve got something similar for people who accidentally start typing in Fortran code into a Java application,” Louise grimaced.

“Yes,” James said slowly. “We’d probably say they were thick as a brick. Fortran, seriously? I haven’t heard of anyone using that since… well, I can’t actually remember anyone using it ever.”

“We were forced to learn it in college, I’ve not used it since, but bits of it are stuck in my brain. It’s like it programmed me… maybe I’m turning into a computer!” She gave him a wink and rolled her eyes.

He started to laugh, but caught sight of what he told himself had to be a reflection of the code on the computer monitor scrolling across her eyes. Except… she hadn’t been facing the monitor when she said it.

Song 3: Serenade of Flames – Serenity
Inspiration: Lyrics – One more night and then in flames you’ll die. Nothing you can do or say will change your fate.
Word Count: 274

The key clanked in the lock and the iron door swung open just far enough to admit a tall man in dark robes. She huddled in the corner, the rags that were her dress clutched around her.

“What are you doing here?” She hissed at him.

“I’m sorry, there’s nothing I can do. I pled your case as well as I could, but… the evidence…” He spread his hands.

“The evidence,” she spat. “Vendetta, that’s what it was. She hasn’t forgiven me for taking you from her. Promise me one thing, husband, that once I’m gone you won’t take her as a wife.”

His gaze slid from hers, and his hand brushed the large cross he wore over his cassock. He remained silent, refusing to look at her.

All of the fear and sadness in her melted into a deep, seething hatred. She stood up with effort, the heavy manacles dragging at her arms. She stepped forward as far as she could, and lowered her voice.

“Then I curse you, husband, as the witch I’m accused of being. May you reap what you have sewn, may fate come full circle upon you and yours.” She spit on the ground at his feet, and turned her back on him. It was silent in the cell for a long time.

“Bless you, wife, and may you find peace,” he said, but his voice was wavering. In spite of everything, she felt a fierce satisfaction.

The next day, he pleaded with her to forgive him, to lift her curse as she was led to the stake, but she simply smiled at his as she was burned alive.

Song 4: Restless – Within Temptation
Inspiration: It’s a song about a ghost haunting her (heart).
Word Count: 104

She sat at the table, staring at the single candle as the cold winter wind howled outside the door. She’d moved halfway around the world, to this remote Highland village, to try to escape the memories. Nothing could have been further from the hustle and bustle of New York City and the life they’d shared there, but she felt his presence as strongly as she had in their apartment. The place they had loved and laughed and promised to grow old together. The place…

The flame on the candle dipped and guttered as the wind outside shrieked “you killed me, and you will pay…”
