Is it just me, or is Pintrest a hotbed of apocalypse tips right now? Every other pin, it seems, is about survival and preparedness. Or miracle diets. Between those there are a few crafts, but they're getting smooshed out with memes and pictures of hot celebrities. Yes, even if I filter by DIY/Crafts. Not everyone categorizes their boards correctly. :/
Sometimes I read them, most of the time I don't. But today, it's between watching the Cowboys and Eagles (go natural disaster!), writing more NaNo (don't ask), cleaning (ugh), or aimlessly surfing the internet. I think we know what won out.
And I found a pin on tips to make your house safer. Okay, who couldn't use that? And some of the tips were fine (especially about securing a sliding glass door) but then...
"Lower your phone’s ringer / answering machine volume. Burglars can easily find your phone number online or by digging through your trash. Then they just call it while standing close to the door and wait to hear if it gets picked up by the machine. If the volume is lowered so it can’t be heard outside the door, then it is one less tool they may use against you."
Um... let's think this through. The burglar, calling your house, could either:
1) Press their ear to the door in hopes of maybe hearing if the answering machine picks up
or
2) Leave the phone to their ear and easily hear if the answering machine picks up
Now, I'm no criminal mastermind, but I think I know which I'd pick.
Also, I hope people who are pinning all these survivalist ideas are reading them and writing them down, because I think in the case of a real apocalypse, good access to the internet might be the first thing to go...
