I'm getting deja-rant. I think I may have blogged this before. :/ Hey, I'm old, my memory's not what it once was.

I just showed a co-worker the Nerdfridge and her reaction was 'those people have too much time'. Because, you know, being clever and creative and fun is totally a pointless waste of time. WTF is wrong with people? I went off on her a little, though it should have been more.

I need to be more discerning about the people I talk to, but it's hard being quiet for 8 hours a day... I'm a talker, what can I say?

That is very rude. It's fun and constructive to do fun things like that. Stupid person!

I'm starting to think jealousy plays a role in it - all the people I've had issues with are the self-proclaimed 'way too busy to...' crowd. They just don't get the idea of making time for fun things, which is way sad for them. :(

That could very well be. It's a give and take--you have to give up time on something else to do it, and if it's not important enough you won't give up the time.

Yup, and again, I think it comes down to respecting the fact that not everyone has the same priorities as you - what's important to one person is not important to another. Why can't people respect other people? *sigh*

Because that would make sense. And since when do people make sense?

For 37 seconds on January 15, 1346, actually, was the last recorded event... ;)

Somehow, I'm not surprised it was that long ago...

I have absolutely no faith in humanity anymore. Sigh.

You're too young to be that cynical! ;)

Oh, this was over the nerdfridge? Jeez, like that took a lot of time anyway. For crying out loud. It was simple, but CLEVER. I mean, the pocket with the pens, totally useful. And it looks a hell of lot better than my cluttered fridge front!!!

as for:
I need to be more discerning about the people I talk to, but it's hard being quiet for 8 hours a day... I'm a talker, what can I say?

I TOTALLY relate to this!!

Yeah, and I'm into Chuck right now, so my pocket protector is going to have the Nerd Herd logo on it. Tee-hee! I'm completely unreasonably excited about it... plus, yeah, my 'fridge is all cluttered and this is a GREAT excuse to clean it off!

Oh, put the Nerd Herd logo on the pocket- AWESOME!!!

Oh, and I once got into a HUGE argument when I was in grad school with one of our post-docs regarding the concept of 'enjoying doing nothing' once in awhile. He was such an ass about it- apparently if you appreciate doing nothing productive as a means of relaxing you are a lazy loser. Grr.

I think you have to do nothing now and then, otherwise you completely fizzle out. Every now and then I suddenly find myself really, really anxious for no reason (the doctor said I may have a slight anxiety problem, and tried to prescribe medication, which made me sick, so...) and if I sit and read a community like weepingcock or bad fanfic or just put on obnoxious music and dance around (all pointless activities) I suddenly feel a lot better. Waste of time, sure, a waste of time that keeps me from having to take medication or having a nervous breakdown!

Wait, what is the Nerdfridge?

I don't think it's a question of who you should/shouldn't talk to - it sounds like it's more a sense of humour thing. Some people just don't share our sense of humour (or, you might say, don't actually have one) and it's depressing to have a "funny" conversation with them. But they might be good to talk to in other situations.

Perhaps another issue (this is an issue I have) is that while you have a good balance of the technical and the creative, you maybe work with people who don't have that balance. In the IT company I work at, there are a lot of people who seem creatively diminished and a little bit humourless. A lot of them are very "focussed" people who would think that the fridge makers had too much time on their hands too...

Personally, I like him :)
