Dear Kansas City Royals:

I'd like to take a moment to talk to you about your new home-run music at Kauffman Stadium. If you want the short version, it's this: it's depressing and you should change it to something more fun and upbeat. For the longer version and the explanation, read on.

When I first bough season tickets a few (5? 6?) years ago, home runs brought on a jazzy, techno-beat driven sound byte accompanied by that nifty 'spiraling the fountains' thing. It was full of energy and the crowd was into it, jumping and cheering. I know a lot of other people are now using that particular music and I can see why you'd want to change it, but this... what you've chosen is awful. Really, really dreadful. And not just because it sounds pretentious and snotty (we're not the Yankees). But mainly because it's a mood killer. You can practically feel that slow, languorous tolling sucking the energy from the crowd.

Looking at your other song choices (Thunderstruck, Kickstart My Heart, and Primal Scream, to name a few) I can see you understand how music can influence the crowd, get them pumped and cheering. Why, then, at the moment of greatest joy, should you actively deflate your audience? I'm now rooting against home runs at games just so I don't have to hear that ostentatious bit of tripe dragging me down to the depths of an emo teenager (I'd much rather a triple followed by a jaunty tune). Why not just play Taps? I mean, if you're going to depress us, go all out! And it could even be a sing-a-long then (though not a lot of people know Taps has words, so it could be a learning experience, too). Or maybe Amazing Grace? At least those are just slow and depressing, not affected and showy.

I know that there are licensing issues and you're not going to pay out the nose to use a particular song (though I still think 'Get Up On Ya Feet' - Aaron Carter/Kim Possible Soundtrack would be the perfect song - upbeat, happy and family friendly, not to mention the apropos lyrics: "Get up on your feet now, gonna rock the place, can't you see this smile on my face!"). But even out of a pool of classical, royalty-free music there are better choices! Hall of the Mountain King? The Anvil Chorus? Ode de Joy? Flight of the Bumblebee? The Hallelujah Chorus? The list goes on and on.

And the number of suitable rock songs is staggering. Admittedly, I'd even prefer to hear an upbeat rap or hip-hop song than the depressing fugue you play now (though that might not stretch to 'Bye Bye Bye' by that boy band, regardless of how appropriate the lyrics might seem).

Maybe I'm the only person that music makes grit their teeth and cringe, though I doubt it. And I know you can't make everyone happy. But I ask you to consider changing the music to something more in line with what you play the rest of the game. Something fun. Something happy. Something to cheer about.

Thank you,
An only-slightly-bitter Royals fan.

What song are they using?

I don't know if it's a real song - that is, I don't think I've heard it elsewhere. But it sounds vaguely like the music they play in The Natural when he hits his home run. I'm pretty sure that's the feeling they were going for.

Is this the one?

It's similar to that, but not exactly. I think that's the original music from The Natural.

But it gives off the same feeling. (For some reason I'm remembering tolling bells in there are well... kinda gong-like, but I could be mis-remembering)

Wait, they hit home runs there? Huh, go figure.

I thought I was being pretty tactful, I left out the suggestion that some player's (coughpenacough) at-bat music should be 'All I Need is a Miracle'... ~.^

Great. Now that song is in my head for the rest of the day.

We get tickets from work every now and then and take the kids. Lots of knitting time for me. Plus they have fun. I'll have to pay attention to the home run music next time. Usually, all I hear is my youngest screaming "Let's go Royals, Let's go!" at the top of his lungs.
