(insert 'I need a long straight one' joke here)

Okay, so I have my 'pattern' for my tetris blanket. It's a slightly modified (to make it wider so the dimensions are better for a blanket) screenshot. None of this 'all the pieces fit together perfectly' nonsense, since you never, ever see a screen like that - they disappear when you make a full row! I even have a falling piece. :D So, now that I have the pattern I want, the question becomes... how do I make it? I think I decided on crochet, since knit blankets tend to curl and I don't want that (unless you do a ribbed knit, I guess). Plus I can make it poofier as a crocheted blanket.

Okay, so crochet. I think I'll just SC throughout, make it easy. And a big hook with two strands, to make it faster (maybe). But now... now the dilemma. Because I really, really, really want to do the black outlines around each of the blocks. (As it really is, see? But, okay, I'll do without the nifty new-fangled shading.) So, here's the question...

Do I crochet it without the black outlines and then stitch them in later (somehow)?

Do I crochet the blocks individually and then crochet them together with black yarn?

Do I have 29 strands of yarn going at once (or, really, 58, if I do the double strands) and crochet it as a continuous piece? (15 blocks and a single black stitch between them, the outside would be done later)

Oh, the decisions! I think I'll crochet up a few test pieces to see how it will look - see if I can get either the crocheting together or the embroidering afterwards to look right.

Or I could just take the easy route and make it a quilt... :D

Stitch the outlines on later with a slip stitch. It'll give it a nice 3d effect. :)

And you can cover up any loose threads that haven't already been sewn under by slip stitching over them! Booyah.

I'm going to try a swatch like that. I was thinking about more of a backstitch, but I really like the idea of a slipstitch! It sounds a whole lot better.

I'm not much good at crochet so no advice from me really. But I have some yarn I'd be happy to pass along if you're interested.

Why not do a (rib)knit a black and gray blanket as your backgroud. Then crochet your pieces and sew them on?

It would be hella work, but a kick butt affect.

That would be a lot of work! Because you'd have to make the whole background, even the parts you're sewing over! D:

Maybe for a pillow...
