Are you sure we can't astroturf the yard?

And have nothing but rock gardens?

...and fake Christmas trees?

There's actually a house around the corner from me where they made their entire front yard into a rock garden. It actually looks really awesome.

So...it can be done. And no lawn mowing!

The rock garden bit was the part that wasn't much of a joke. We have quite an area in the back that is rocks, though I admit it looks really neat with the big natural rocks with the plants growing up between them.

...I just need to pick plants that don't fight back so effectively. The cut across the pad of my thumb is really irritating... :/

My roommate (well, former roommate now I guess) is planning to carpet her room next year in AstroTurf. And set up a hammock. She got a cool hammock, but AstroTurf is expensive.

I just read a book (Crossing California) where they talk about how all the porches are covered in astroturf. I guess that was a big thing in the 70s. Now I can see the astroturf-hammock thing as some really edge design concept. Or something scary out of Trading Spaces. On one hand, I think it could look cool. On the other hand, astroturf is not soft and I like soft, fluffy rugs (hence my hatred of berber)

Astroturf and rock gardens? Go for it. Fake Christmas trees, however, is where I draw the line. It's not really Christmas unless the living room's covered in pine needles and there's at least one daily argument over who has to water the tree.

"and there's at least one daily argument over who has to water the tree."

Haha! That made me laugh.

I've had a fake Christmas tree for as long as I can remember, even mostly growing up. And I have no idea how we'd even get a real tree home!

And fake trees shed, too! It's just that they're plastic pine needles all over the living room (which are actually a lot harder to vacuum up because they're flat).

But that means you'll first have to take out the existing garden.

You do have a point! And I can't really even move right now, let alone tear out all the plantings... :/
