You know, if it wasn't for all the people I knew on LJ, I would stop using it. What the Hell. Can they make it anymore obvious that the only people who can use LiveJournal are the ones that have a credit card?

I need a Richard Armitage icon to cheer me up.
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 02:33 am (UTC)
Of course. It's been so long since they've pissed off large chunks of their user base; they had to do something.
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 02:34 am (UTC)
I hate and loathe the adverts too. Such bullshit.

I thought about opening one tonight just to keep it in the wings if I want it later, but you know, I doubt I will. If I ever want to make a new one, I think I'll just go with Blogger.
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 02:38 am (UTC)
I know. I really keep hoping all the awesome communities re-establish themselves on IJ.

Sadly, what I see happening is everyone just drifting away, and that'll be sad, since I really do enjoy my on-line time. And other places like Blogger don't provide 'community'. :(
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 02:40 am (UTC)
Well, SUP couldn't be one-upped by their predecessor, could they? And besides, they were drama-free for 100 days, what more can you ask?!

*sigh* This really irks me. I was about to create a journal for a friend of mine, but now it's too late. We'll have to move to IJ, because I'm not subjecting her to ads!
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 02:41 am (UTC)
My only problem with Blogger is there's no community. And I love the communities!

It's already too late, you can no longer create a basic account. :/
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 02:42 am (UTC)
but... it's still the 12th!
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 02:44 am (UTC)
I know, but it no longer works. Seems they had a user number limit, and once people rushed out to make more free accounts, they were all used up. I tried well over an hour ago, it's Plus or Paid!
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 02:45 am (UTC)
That's just silliness.
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 02:48 am (UTC)
Well, that just sucks. And it's faulty advertising too, or is that non-advertising, was this announced properly?

Ridiculous.

And I know, the communities are fabulous, it's what everywhere else lacks.
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 02:52 am (UTC)
There was no official announcement AT ALL. Still hasn't been.

Some eagle-eyed user noticed it in the FAQ. And a staff member responded, (http://news.livejournal.com/106731.html?thread=68484587#t68484587) but still no out-and out announcement.
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 02:53 am (UTC)
It's like they want us to hate them.

(oooooh, italics, maybe we can use those on the war against new, stupid policies? ~.^)
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 02:53 am (UTC)
WTF.

The only reason I don't mind ads on IJ is that they never promised no ads...
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 02:54 am (UTC)
I'll have to store all my NaNo novels in one community. I liked being able to create a new one every year. This makes me sad.
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 02:59 am (UTC)
Communities, for the moment, are still able to be 'Basic'.

However, it's probably only a matter of time. Also, there's speculation that allowing Basic users to stay Basic is only temporary, too!
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 03:01 am (UTC)
I didn't even notice they had ads!

I guess it shows they did it well enough that it didn't jack up layouts, like a lot of the ones on LJ do - especially on the profile pages! Some of those screw things up something fierce.

I just hate ads in general. And I really, really, really love Adblock Plus! Seriously, we should all take the money we'd've spent on LJ and send it to those people...
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 03:06 am (UTC)
Oh, god, this also means every new community will have ads. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 03:09 am (UTC)
Oooh, I'll go stock up on communities, then. If they make me see ads, though, I'm out. AdBlock or no, it's the principle of the thing.
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 03:10 am (UTC)
LOL!!!

Italics may come in handy, definitely a good idea to keep them in the arsenal.
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 03:10 am (UTC)
No, not yet. You can still create Basic communities... for now.

Seriously. FIREFOX. ADBLOCK. You won't regret it. I thought I'd never get used to it, clung to IE for waaaaaay to long, and now I can't even imagine! It makes EVERY website better.
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 03:11 am (UTC)
It was a shame that person deleted their comments before I saw it... but maybe it's for the best, I probably couldn't have helped needling them a little bit...
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 03:13 am (UTC)
I know, it's just sad. I worry that everyone I know here is just going to drift away. But, I guess things happen, life moves on.

It's weird, I never cared about moving as a child, leaving everyone behind (and this was before you could keep up with e-mail!) but now, I'm getting old and settled and I don't like this change! :/
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 03:18 am (UTC)
I'm the same way about websites. I was devasted when Bolt closed last year -- now it's "replacement" Helldot is undergoing some major changes and I'm not liking it one bit. If LJ forces me to abandon it... *sigh*

I think I'll reserve communities for my NaNo's through 2015. I don't know that I'll still be here by then, but hope springs eternal or some crap like that.
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 03:20 am (UTC)
I have Firefox (love, love, love it!), and ABP, but ads still show up on Plus accounts, just not as separate windows, between the post and the comments below. (unless I just don't have my ABP set strong enough?)

I'm a huge fan of all the Firefox add-ons (Biobar and StumbleUpon for example). I got it as soon as I was forced off the Mac (and Safari) and onto a PC again (a few years ago?).
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 03:21 am (UTC)
I'm really bummed I didn't take screenshots. It was pretty amusing.
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 03:22 am (UTC)
I was on a BB once, but lost interest. It's just not the same as a blog, I think.
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 03:26 am (UTC)
You have to right-click and add those domains to the blocking filters.

This is what I have on mine so far (http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n44/smeddley/adblock-1.jpg), and I've only had my computer a month. My old one had way more, but these are the most common!
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 03:26 am (UTC)
I was sad when my other sites closed, but I don't think that's anything compared to if I'm forced to give up LJ. There's three years of my life in this journal.
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 03:30 am (UTC)
Yeah, I think a lot of people feel that way, and that's why people put up with so much...
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 10:51 am (UTC)
Apparently you can protest to these (http://synecdochic.livejournal.com/203464.html) people? Bah, stupidity.
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 12:15 pm (UTC)
...whut. Can they not stand having accounts that they're not making money off, or something?

I hope this doesn't push everyone away from LJ. I love the people and communities and suchforth here. D: (And I don't want to start another blog from scratch. >_>)

(Might have to look into this Adblock Plus thing. It's a firefox add-on, yes?)
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 02:46 pm (UTC)
I have no idea what you're talking about with advertising. I never really see anything on here when I'm surfing around. Maybe I'm special or maybe I'm missing something. What are you seeing that I'm not?
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 03:17 pm (UTC)
It is, and I find it helpful with everything from Yahoo to the Weather channel's page. Things load so much faster without those ads! There's also scripts you can use that block things, but I'm happy enough with my Adblock (though since I currently have a paid account I don't have to use it on LJ, I'm horrified when I surf other sites from computers without it!)
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 03:18 pm (UTC)
And yet you have a plus account, one that is *supposed* to have ads! Are you using Firefox with adblock?
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 11:36 pm (UTC)
It is, indeed. I'm tempted to fire off a postcard... *sigh* But by the time it got there... better off with angry messages on news, at least until they disable that!
