I'm thinking a St. Patrick's Day start. But if you want to get bonus points before then, keep a lookout for opportunities in everyday posts (and, of course, you can suggest rounds and challenges, or just say something funny or interesting... lots of ways to get extra points!).

For example, this one:

I went and donated blood today, but almost couldn't. And the reason was one I'd not heard before. Why was I almost rejected as a blood donor?

Answer will be posted this evening tomorrow morning (can't be unfair to my Australian peeps).

You mean I have to be witty?! All the time?!

*wibbles*

You couldn't donate because you were abducted by aliens and they tried to experiment on you, but SG-1 broke in just in time and Jack O'Neill swept you up in his arms and brought you safely home. You had to wait for a clean bill of health from Dr. Fraiser (or whoever it is now ...) before you were allowed to donate blood.

+2 Jack reference. :)
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 11:25 pm (UTC)
*grins* I thought you might like some of him ;)
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 07:06 pm (UTC)
Oh man, we have to be INTERESTING to get bonus points? I'm so screwed...
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 07:46 pm (UTC)
Not all the time, and I think you underestimate your wit! :)

(and yes, evidently you were, considering - ba-dum-dum)
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 08:10 pm (UTC)
Ha! It actually took me a minute to figure that out...damn pregnancy brain!

Oh, and about the blood...did they consider rejecting you due to recent menstruation? It can temporarily cause low red blood cell levels sometimes, apparently.

You know, they never ask me that. The doctor's office did the last time I was in there, and I told her flat out, "Look, I can't even guess. I have no clue when my last one was, is it really important?" The nurse said no, that was fine, but looked at me kinda funny. Like I'm supposed to keep track or something! o.O
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 09:39 pm (UTC)
Yes, they really seem to think you're SUPPOSED to keep track of those things. I never quite manage to. It REALLY annoys doctors if you're pregnant and can't remember your last period, though. I had to sit around and figure it out ('I know it was a Monday, and I know it was the same week I went Christmas shopping with my brother. I went shopping with my brother the first Thursday in December, therefore...'). Kind of pathetic, but really, who remembers to write it down?
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 10:58 pm (UTC)
It's just not something I want lying around on a calendar, really. Especially since the only calendar I use is my Outlook at work. And I can't think of a clever way to disguise what I'm actually trying to say...

Small red "X" somewhere?

Sorry for piping up :) But it's a thought. I never remember to write it down either ...
Thursday, March 6th, 2008 07:16 am (UTC)
I wish that I kept track, because that would help me work out whether I've skipped 6 or 7 periods in a year.

It's not like the extra one makes things more bad!
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 07:13 pm (UTC)
I get rejected all the time! In fact, I've never successfully donated blood. I think I must be a high-risk person with all my sexual activity. Maybe if I go in there soon and say, "I've been celibate for 5 yrs, then they'll take me?"

Or I tell them I have fainting issues, VasoVagal syndrome. That also rules me out too. Oh I may pass out?

And when I was lighter, then I never passed the minimum weight requirements (that's been a while though).
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 07:55 pm (UTC)
I've been monogomous for almost 15 years, so that's not it. I'm also a model blood donor - no fainting or bruising or anything. This was really weird... In fact, I can't even find where it says anything about it on their web site!
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 07:15 pm (UTC)
Do you not weigh enough? That's why my excuse for not giving blood.
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 07:56 pm (UTC)
Oh goodness no. I am WELL over the minimum weight. In fact, I can't even remember not weighing enough! Though I'm sure at some point I was under 115, it wasn't in high school or college.

I got nothing.

I had something witty, and then it fled.

Borderline anemic?
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 07:59 pm (UTC)
Though I have been that in the past, my iron was actually quite good today. Over the average for a woman, in fact. So, nope, this was something I'd never heard before.
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 08:20 pm (UTC)
Did you go abroad just prior to the Mad Cow outbreaks?
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 10:59 pm (UTC)
No, sadly, never been to Europe. :( I'd like to go some day, but I'll pass on the mad cow.

You get a +1 for 'Mad Cow' though! (I have a love of diseases - studying them, not getting them!)
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 11:04 pm (UTC)
Hmmm.

They discovered nerdiness is a bloodborne virus? Or is it yarn-stashing is contagious?
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 11:06 pm (UTC)
Aaaaaaaaand another +1 to you!

(but you also have to come clean the Diet Coke out of my keyboard, missy)
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 09:06 pm (UTC)
You tried donating blood at the sperm bank?
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 11:00 pm (UTC)
To be honest, I don't know if we even have a sperm bank around here. I guess I'm sure we do, but, for obvious reasons, it's never occurred to me to look it up.

The rehab group just got out, and all the syringes were occupied?

The Bank was full?

They couldn't make change for a liter?

Hardened arteries wouldn't allow the needle through?

You didn't donate in the form of a question?

"They couldn't make change for a liter?"

+1, awesome punnage.
Thursday, March 6th, 2008 12:21 am (UTC)
You've been on antibiotics recently?

You've been drinking other people's blood and so mixing your blood type to potentially disastrous results for someone who receives a transfusion?

They were double booked? (On the second flight home, dad's seat was double booked! Luckily there was an empty seat further up the plane.)

They had just gotten rick-rolled and were too ashamed to see people?
Thursday, March 6th, 2008 12:37 am (UTC)
I'm torn on giving you a +1 for the obvious vampire reference...

Double-booking is just wrong. +1 to your dad 'cause that sucks.
Thursday, March 6th, 2008 12:51 am (UTC)
What vampire references? You totally suck for not getting my pop culture references. =[

Were you maybe late, or had forgotten some piece of essential ID or lingerie?
Thursday, March 6th, 2008 12:55 am (UTC)
I suck at pop culture references, that's for sure. Especially Australian pop culture. ;)

Nope (I was a walk-in), nope (just need a driver's license), and... why would I need lingerie?!
Thursday, March 6th, 2008 07:17 am (UTC)
...There was no pop culture reference.

Had you (not?) eaten or drunk anything or taken any particular medication recently?
Thursday, March 6th, 2008 03:43 pm (UTC)
I am banned for life from donating blood because of my thyroid disease. It's considered an auto-immune disorder. Allergies are apparently considered with the same frame of mind.

You told them you were allergic to idiots, didn't you?
Thursday, March 6th, 2008 11:32 pm (UTC)
Good solid logic and reasoning plus a punchline earns you a +2!
