My instructor insists you can belly dance to any type of music, and it's up to us to try to come up with music that you can't. I think the key is little, no, or constantly changing beats - that's what makes music really hard to dance to. I'd add that a really slow beat could also be problematic. As would a super-fast beat (think thrash metal, but she also doesn't want anything with swearing in it, since the class is open to all ages and we've had kids in it).

So far I have the following:

Animaniacs, in particular the Nations of the World song
Apocalyptica
Scorpions with the Berlin Philharmonic, Rock You Like a Hurricane and an instrumental piece
Any number of slow, drum-less 80s hair ballads (I was thinking Tomorrow by Europe)
Carmina Burana
Flight of the Bumblebee
The Anvil Chorus
