Still nary a word has dribbled from my fingertips in the writing challenge. I partially blame the fact that the first project I wanted to work on, my uncompleted NaNo, is still on Mick (who hangs out downstairs these days) and I need to copy it to a jump drive to take upstairs to my computer. Or I could bring Mick to work and write over lunch, as it's supposed to be in the single digits and going outside is not high on my list of things to do. But it's a moot point for today, since he's still at home.

Then I thought about going out and buying some yarn - now, wait, it's not what you think. See, remember that Tetris Afghan I made for the Ravelympics? Well, or course I had yarn left over so I started making some solid granny squares, with the intent of making another Tetris Afghan. But, since the first was so thick and heavy (made with double strands of yarn!) I only had enough, in some cases, for 6 new squares. This... creates a conundrum. Either I re-design a much smaller Tetris Afghan, or one with a lot more black space, or... or I buy more yarn. If I buy more yarn, that means I'll definitely have more left over, since I only need 3-5 more squares for some of them. This would mean yet another Tetris Afghan, this one probably make with squares of Tunisian Crochet (which Mr. Smeddley would prefer, anyway, since it's more solid). Seems like the decision is made, then.

BUT! This is not the end of the conundrum. You see, through [livejournal.com profile] lbs_for_yarn I vowed to earn my yarn money. I said that each WiiFit session, swimming session, and pound lost would get me $1 to spend on yarn. I haven't weighed myself, but so far this year I've swum 4 times and used the WiiFit twice (I missed yesterday, but I'd have felt bad kicking Mr. Smeddley off the TV on his birthday and there was a KU game on... I know, excuses, excuses!). I doubt I've lost any weight, I'll ask the WiiFit at the end of the month. So that's a whole $6 so far. This would buy 3 skeins of the Red Heart I need for the afghan, and I do have some other yarn I could use... I can just have very little of one or two colors on the Granny Square Tetris Afghan... so that would advance that project. Now for the 'but' - I also found the yarn I want to buy to make my first Clapotis. Not too expensive, but silky and shiny and smooth, so the drop stitches will come out. It's a silk/bamboo and will cost about $15 for enough to make the project (not too expensive for my first try!). That's three weeks of working out, though.

Now, no matter what I'm going to have a bazillion squares of black to crochet for the background of the already started Granny Square afghan, and I do have another Granny Square afghan I'm working on that needs about a dozen rows of edging. And I can start making some of the Tunisian Crochet squares in the other colors (unless I want to do that one the way I did the original, and crochet it together as I go). And I have a million other projects I need to finish... so I should just let the money build. But at some point I will have to decide - which do I buy first (and how long can I hold off?!)?

So today I should just stay in and work on my grey basketweave scarf, anyway. Today I shall not plunge recklessly into buying more yarn that may or may not be the right color (I don't even have swatches with me!). Today I've decided I'll plan and take stock of what I have and what I can substitute so I can buy a minimum of new yarn. Today I will be good. I think.
