1. Why engineering?
The answer to this one is more a ‘why not?’ My dad was an engineer, I was good at math and science, and it seemed a good fit. I was 17, what did I know? Perhaps, if I were to go back and do it over I’d pick a different career (still in math/science, though). But I’m pretty happy with my life, so maybe not.

2. How did you meet your husband?
He was my boss at one of my crap-tastic college jobs (fast food).

3. Do you prefer a humid heat or a dry heat?
Man, I prefer zero heat. Heat makes me sick as a dog – I’ve passed out once from the heat, and I tend to get really nauseous and nasty when I’m overheated. So despite the number it would do on my sinuses, I’d probably rather have it on the dry side, so at least I could sweat and cool myself off.

4. What's your favorite place that you've ever lived?
Washington State. I love the Pacific Northwest.

5. What's your favorite 'mythological' creature?
It’s trite, but probably dragons.

1. Would you shave your head for money? (Not for a friend w/cancer or a similar good cause, just for cold hard cash.)
How much money? There’s certainly an amount that would make me do it, I’m just not entirely sure where the threshold is. I’d probably start to consider it at $100,000 (tax-free) and by $500,000 (again, tax-free!) I’m pretty sure I would, depending on stipulations. Would I have to keep it shaved for long, or just shave it once? Could I wear hats? That sort of thing.

2. Do you think fish and small rodents make good pets?
We have a fish tank and two gerbils. Fish aren’t so much pets as… decoration. It’s very soothing to sit and stare at the fish tank, and that water makes a nice sound, so if you’re willing to deal with the water changes and cleaning, yes. Small rodents? I guess it depends on what you want out of them. We don’t handle ours often (because of the dog, we don’t want any ‘accidents’), but they are a riot to watch. And the dog watches them, too. But in the terms of what I consider a ‘pet’? Not so much. I don’t think there’s much of a substitute for a dog (or cat, if you lean that way).

3. Do you file your own taxes or have them done for you?
I do them myself. There’s nothing really hard about it, as I don’t have offshore investments or annuities or any of that crap. I now itemize my deductions, but that’s the only real deviation from the 1040EZ – and I have those, what, eight lines? down pat.

4. If you had to have one quote used as your epitaph, what would it be?
Probably “I reject your reality and substitute my own”. It’s the only quote that I know that seems to still make sense coming from a dead person.

5. How did you or your husband propose? How long had you known each other before you got married?
We… didn’t really. It was more of a ‘so, you want to get married?’ and ‘yeah, I guess we should’ sort of thing. It’s kind of a sad story, his dad was dying and he thought he wanted to see him married. So we had a little ceremony in his backyard. If it had been up to us… I think we eventually would have gotten around to it (by now, certainly, if not just to have him on my health insurance!), but I don’t think the ceremony was all that important to either of us. I always say that marriage really shouldn’t change anything – if you’re committed to one another before you get married, what’s the difference afterwards? A slip of paper and a ring? And people should never marry someone thinking that will fix problems or change them. Ahem, anyway, enough soapbox, and for the second half of your question, we lived together for 4 years before we got married.

Nothing wrong with dragons. I love dragons. Have one sitting on my computer at work. Course, Dad gave it to me (he has a serious thing about toys).

Yeah, I just didn't want to come across as the stereotypical fantasy geek! :D My other answer would be gargoyles, but, really, in a sense they aren't mythological, because they're stone creatures perched on buildings - and we have those. But I guess if you said 'live' gargoyles?

Gargoyles are fun too. Have you ever seen pictures of the ones on the National Cathedral?

I have now! How cool!

Hmm, good questions back at my first one. I suppose shaved once, hats allowed but not 24/7 and no wigs... something like that. Interesting monetary amounts, too. It would certainly take quite a bit for me to shave mine, as well. I love my hair, it's pretty long and I consider it a part of who I am. If for no good reason, it would take a lot of convincing (a.k.a. money) for me to do it.

Sad story, but very touching. I'm sure his dad really appreciated that. :)

Hair grows back, in a few months you'd have a cute pixie cut - and think of the maintenance free days! That would be heaven! Just tie a scarf around your head or slap on a hat (no sunburned scalp for me!) and off you go. No hat hair, either.

I'm pretty attached to my hair (it's almost waist-length, now) and I haven't had short hair since the fourth grade, but money is a powerful motivator. I think for $100,000 I would have to be allowed wigs/full time coverage, but by $500,000 I would run around bald. With your stipulations... Probably about $300,000 would do it.

Y'all are sissies. I once shaved my head (well, 1/8 of an inch with one of those buzzer thingies) just for kicks.

Now, I PROBABLY wouldn't do THAT again. Especially not in the winter. But I would do it for $1000, no problem. Maybe even less. Although my price range may be skewed due to poorness...
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 03:08 am (UTC)
Man, what I wouldn't do for a spare $1,000 right now. Well, technically, if you were talking about (aboot?) Canadian dollars, that's only $991.10 in US money. ;) Save myself almost $9!

But you also said your hair grows fast, and mine does not! I'd be balder longer...

Oooh, the first question is quite close to my first question! With math and science skillz, why not the life sciences though? I always wonder that, why one would choose the physical sciences over life sciences, which I find most fascinating. Of course, my son is educating me on that, he's so excited to FINALLY be doing physics and chemistry and not any biology/environmental science this year.

And I wholeheartedly agree with you that fish are decoration!! They're as much pets as a favored houseplant really.

I shall answer your questions when I get some more (I don't want to tack them on to this older entry, but I have 3-4 more groups that should be coming back to me and I want to at least have groups of two to post!), and they are good ones! You were just as creative as I was. But, really, man, it gets really hard to come up with creative things after awhile. I was just about down to 'if you were a flavor of ice cream...' ;)

ha ha! I'm patient, no worries! I really should be online tonight anyway. Ah, good days make me feel lazy at work and home.

I'm so glad you did this meme. It's neat to hear about things you wouldn't otherwise talk about. For example, how your hubby proposed - I love those stories, however they happened. :)
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 04:06 pm (UTC)
I should tell the story of the first time he told me he loved me. That one's even better! ;)

Yeah, it's not that I mind talking about myself, I just never know what to say and what people will find interesting! :D
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 04:09 pm (UTC)
Well, now you can't leave me hanging!
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 05:57 pm (UTC)
Ah, okay, I'll write up the story today or tomorrow. Can you wait that long? :)
