"It is more important to scare people [into action] than it is to tell them to truth"
Friday, November 16th, 2007 07:11 pm (UTC)
I've found the truth is often pretty scary.

It should be scary enough to motivate people, but oft times it's not. Still, I can't see lying to make a point, because when do you stop? Who decided who gets what truth?! Bah! It's a sore spot for me, I guess. :)

It's funny because, in the movement I'm active in, we're accused of lying all the time. When it comes to how animals are treated on farms, the truth seems to be difficult for people to accept - so they attack the messenger's credibility.

I understand in a way, because the stuff we're talking about is so overwhelmingly horrifying, it's almost unbelievable.

Okay, that was somewhat tangential. That is all.

You should teach people to not care if you don't want them to accuse of lying! Works every time.

Sadly, I do believe that people treat animals badly - one only has to look to the cruelty of cock and dog fighting to see that. The 'they're only animals' mentality. Of course, I'm a bit of a hypocrite in that, since I do eat meat... If I could be sure my meat came from 'humane' farms, I would. I know it seems like an oxymoron, but I do thing there's a difference between killing for food quickly and efficiently and torture.

And, honestly, the truth about human beings being lousy and cruel is not at all hard for me to accept. On the contrary, I don't believe it when someone does something 'just to be nice'. Man, when did I become so cynical?

Frightening indeed. But not a new sentiment. :(

No, an old, recurring theme. And it's never done any good. :/

Let me guess, is that from the DARE program?
Saturday, November 17th, 2007 12:51 am (UTC)
No, it was someone supporting An Inconvenient Truth (the movie). Of course, they wouldn't say that if it was something they *disagreed* with, which is the sticky part of that sort of statement...

I wonder. If the truth isn't enough to scare/shock people into wanting to do something... is the problem serious enough?

That, m'dear, is the million dollar question.

hi i followed this from elaran's, i actually know all of the quotes in your bio and am now enamoured with craftgrrl as a craftlover myself.(so thanks!)

Also i do not agree with that statement, it's based on the presumption that the weight you're attaching to the 'truth' is actually valid. It becomes a question of realities, and is a bit iffy to mess with by using dishonesty.
pretty unsolvable.
hmm i think i will elbaorate this in post of my own.

friending ok? :)

Well, hello! I had toast for breakfast... but my Toast-N-Wave is acting up, and I can't turn down the heat, and it was very traumatic that I had to eat slightly browner toast than I would have liked, and your username is bringing back flashbacks of... NO! NO! Scrape it off! The black bits are... AHHHHHHHH!

*ahem*

Then above is an example of my normal weird self. Very few real serious topics are every brought up here, just so you're warned. ;)

As for the serious topic at hand, you've hit another point squarely - who decides who gets what truth and how much? Slippery slope indeed!

Friending is always good, if you can put up with my randomness and occasional whining. Man, I do *not* want to do laundry... *groan*
