Our old hamster mostly slept and ate. Didn't seem that interested in much. The gerbils, on the other hand, are little Doozers and are always building, re-arranging, and making god-awful amounts of noise in the middle of the night.
I can see octopi being smart, though. I had to chase this fellow all over the place just to get a picture of him...
The ones at this one research lab used to cross the room to the fish tank and feed while in the middle of the night and be back in their tank by the time the scientists got back in the morning. They had seen where the food was and were able to cross the room out of the water. Amazing, yeah? (I've heard the story a dozen times in class, srsly)
Have you met my husband? No, I guess not. If you had, you'd know I actually did have to chase him down... But I love the smart-ass pain-in-the-rear lazy... er, love of my life. :D
I'm not sure I could handle a real octopus... I'm not so great with non-mammals, because I really don't understand them. You never know what's going on in that little head of theirs...
Hm, as long as it's not a parasite, I'm okay. Well, minus the insects, maybe. Not that fond of them. Though that is a good point ... they do think quite differently from us.
Thanks, I was surprised by how many people like the other one I made and requested them! I'm going to get out my books and try my hand at some of the other crochet animal patterns I have... one of these days...
You know, there are very few patterns for dogs of any kind... I have one dog pattern, this one (http://pics.livejournal.com/smeddley/pic/000esgra), but couldn't really find any other decent ones on the web. That's just wrong!
It's actually crochet, and you can use the picture, no credit needed. I got the instructions from some other web site, so it's not like it's an original design or anything! :D But he (she?) sure is popular!
right... so i a post you made on the nanowrimo thingie site on lj. i think we may be from the same planet. came from under the same rock? hatched the same day?
rly. consider yourself friended. yup... a random, drive-by friending.
hello back. i hope you like animals (reptiles?)and dancing with the damn stars, because that is all i really rant about. oh, and dave too. when he does something really dumb. which is like every other minute.
You happened to catch me working on one of my icon communities. Sundays tend to find me at the computer!
I love all animals, even reptiles (though I'm not as comfortable handling them because I don't understand them and can't predict their reactions). Dancing with the Stars, not so much. I try to avoid reality TV... actually, other than sporting events I watch very little. At least I try to. It's usually on, but I rarely pay attention.
oh but HOW can you not LUV wayne newton in spangly spandex?! *gak*
you know, many people have a problem with reptiles, which is fine by me... they are not for everyone. BUT i am impressed with your reasoning. most people say "they creep me out". but usually its exactly what you said, that they are misunderstood and cannot be read as easily as a dog or cat (and even they have some discrepancies!).
yes, i digress lots. diatribe seems to be a very good adjective for it. non compos mentis. lol.
i have a few jobs. every other sunday i work at a hospital switchboard. in a very quiet new hampshire town. its quiet and i get to surf for 9 hours straight. makes me a happy camper.
I can avoid most things in spangly spandex, I think. ;)
Reptiles also require and obscene amount of care, yet another reason I'd not have one as a pet. But when I was a zoo docent I'd handle them, they're not bad. And when I was little and we lived on Guam I was the 'Gecko patrol' and removed them humanely from the house.
Work does not let me surf, sadly. Woe is me and their website-blocking software! I have a backdoor way that allows me to sort of surf, though, thanks to a friend of mine. I don't know why they just don't trust me! *grins*
now you see, i think that my horse requires more care than all my reptiles put together, but that is just me. i have several snakes. they eat once a week (actually the larger ones are fed once every other week). poop once a week. and have their water changed once a week. thats it. the dogs need daily excercise (ever leash a reptile? lol) cats have to have their catbox cleaned once a day. (i have three furballs) the horse needs her stall cleaned daily (albeit i board her.. lol)
i also have two crested geckos that are the sweetest things around. bless you for intervening on the behalf of your house geckos... sweet!
i am sorry about your work surfing woes. i suppose i am lucky. both my office jobs allow me to check lj and emails during my shifts. i have withdrawals when i cannot... *smirk*
so what did you handle at when you were a docent? (i can be really pesty at times... tell me to go away when i am. i'm used to it... lol)
Okay, horses, yes. And I guess the pooch is work, but I figure she's cheaper and more effective than a gym membership, so I don't count that. :)
Feeding snakes would bug me. I know they need to eat what they eat and I understand it's the chain of life and it's all perfectly natural... I just don't want to see it. I've had pet mice, and we had a hamster and currently have two gerbils, so I'm... yeah, I'm mammal-centric, I admit.
Oh, when I was a decent... *thinks back* On the reptile front, not much. There were some smaller snakes, I remember. Turtles. And I think there were a few gecko-like critters (I honestly don't remember which ones). I remember the tree frogs, and walking the goats mostly. But most of the time we stood by exhibits or gave mini-tours.
yah, the rodent thing was VERY hard for me. i still have not come to total grips with it. but if it is any consolation, we do not feed live here. we do frozen thawed. or as the industry calls it "ratsicles". (sorry...)
it is cruel to feed live. cruel to both animals involved. snakes can get pretty messed up by a panicked rodent. and the eating process does not always go smooth and the rodent can suffer too. we get our snakefood through the mail. on dry ice. between the mail order rodents for the snakes and the crickets by mail for the dragons, well my postman really despises me. lol.

We studied octopi the other day in zoology. They're supposed to be very smart. They need entertaining things in their tanks, like hamsters do :D
