I got a postcard from Australia the other day. It didn't tell me that the weather was nice, or that the person was having a good time. No, it said this:

He cried when I told him I had to leave. Unlike the ones who had been before him, however, he did not beg or bribe or blackmail. He cried, and his tears were beautiful spiraling rainbows that collected on the sand. After a time he wiped both eyes with his sleeve and looked at me.

"Thank-you," he said after a few croaks, "for everything." He smiled, a ghastly affair considering his red, puffy eyes. "Is there anything I can offer you in true thanks? I-I do not know what is appropriate at such a time as this..."

"You have already given me plenty," I said, wondering if this was a ploy or the truth.

"I do not think so," he said. "All I have not lost, all I have gained - all thanks to you. But you, what have you gained that could compare to everything I owe you?"

"Memories," I said, stretching back to stare up at the clouds. "It gets boring, after awhile, only having so many years to remember."

He laid next to me, resting his hands on my stomach. "Do you think I will be all right, on my own?"

"You're a smart boy"

"I will miss you," he said, smiling.

"I will remember you often," I replied.

"Maybe," he said, after a time, and by his tone I knew his intention. "I could talk to your father..."

"And live your remaining years as a rat? Don't talk nonsense."

"Fine," he said, and rolled, unbuttoning my shirt. "I won't talk," he said, and began kissing my stomach.

But it was I who cried when he left me longing.

All on a postcard (obviously, it was all smooshed together). Written Scrawled in gold ink. It was AWESOME. If a little odd, coming from Pen.

So in that spirit, anyone want a postcard fiction from me? I can't promise anything near as neat, though I can promise blue or black ink. :)

That, is just, wow. What a treat to have received in the mail, thanks for sharing it with us as well!!

I do have to admit, the gold ink is awesome, but then, I had the ease of reading your typed copy instead. But then, I love silver ink myself.

Yeah, there's just something special about snail mail. Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside...

I pretty much stick to blue, black, and red ink. I was never that into (even in high school) the 'pretty' colors. I don't know why!

I know! As much as I mock the handwriting, it really does hieghten the anticipation and makes it all the more wonderous to read the story when you have to concentrate!

Pen's amazingly clever, even though this was a bit on the unusual side for her! I'm totally going to try it, as soon as I can find some postcards... (that's a whole other story)

I pick my friends based on their writing ability, dontcha know? On the down side, it makes me look bad by comparison, on the up side, I get to read all sorts of awesome things!

Have you looked in your house? *snicker*

Ha! Actually, I may have one or two, but by the time I found them I could have driven to dozens of stores... in dozens of states. I am the person who's been missing a checkbook for 3 years.

*nod sagely*

There is that side of things of course. ;)

I guess driving to the shop is much easier.

It's too late for the first round, but I'll put you in the second group! :D

You're supposed to plant bulbs in the fall, anyway, right? I still have soooooo much work to do in the yard. :/

hey, i'll wait!
thanks for doing this for me...

are there rules to this game? do i need to send you a postcard too??
Saturday, May 24th, 2008 03:04 pm (UTC)
No rules. You can post about it in your journal if you want to spread the idea, though. I think it's neat, because it's writing practice and really, the art of letter (or postcard) writing is too precious to be completely lost.
