OH. MY. DOG.

Three hours. Okay, nearly. Three bloody hours of my life I will never, ever, ever get back. I sat through Watchmen. And I regret every moment of it. And there wasn't the promised giant blue penis. Oh, no, just a regular little thing, glimpsed here and there. Nothing special, except perhaps the blue-ness (if anyone mentions Smurf porn, they lose a body part - this is non-negotiable, I'm traumatized already).

I've rarely watched an action movie with so little action - except maybe 300 (though that was a 'regular', albeit short, action movie if you watched it in fast forward, which really only sped most of it up to regular speed). It was so dull. Very full of grandiose speeches that, in all honestly, said very little (obviously, the script writer was a politician!). There was a lot of gratuitous violence (I may also be biased because, while senseless killing of people is fine - in movies, people, in movies - killing animals (even in movies) is so not). There were a few techno-bits, mostly senseless techno-babble and not a lot of cool toys, though. And there was a lot of sex. Which even managed to be boring (probably because the blue penis wasn't involved).

There was a basic plot, which, I will admit, if you stripped away a lot of the other crap had the potential to be interesting. The moral dilemma of sacrificing the few to save the many has been played out a million times, true, but it's a strong enough idea to stand up to the wear and tear. But it still has to be done well, and I can't say this was. I didn't even care by the end of the movie. Not at all. I was only sorry I'd sat through the whole thing, but very, very, very glad I didn't spend a single penny to see it (thank you, library).

Defend it in the comments if you want, and feel free to point out any decent superhero/comic book character movies I've missed. I can't promise I'll give them a try (I've been burned by so many), but maybe it'll restore my faith in the movie industry's ability to make a decent action flick. :(
