I'm not over the hubbub about the suspended journals, not by a long shot. LJ has irreparably damaged people's reputations, and unless they do something about the libel (many other web site posting these journals as pedophilia) they could have impacted these people permanently.
This is NOT acceptable.
The tone of the 'apology', the lateness of it, and the 'corrective measures taken' are also NOT acceptable. Much more needs to be done. Starting with replying to many of the concerns raised on the
news post, not just the ones with 'easy' answers ("You should have come to us first" => "Yeah, we know that and we're sorry").
Yeah, mistakes are made in life. But a blind pygmy mouse has enough brain power and visions to see this idea was bad from the outset. They admitted they didn't even look at the journals and still thought this was a good idea?!
I'm not deleting my account. No, I'm not going to let them 'turn this into the community they want'. But will I ever pay for anything again? Doubtful. And if nothing happens to change my mind between now and December (when my current paid status expires) I will have to revert to free and will not look at a single 'Plus' journal. Because I refuse to let them make money off of me by way of advertisers, either.
And I really hate that this happened. I love LJ, I love the communities (something you don't get places like Blogger or on your own web site), I love the people I've met. I don't want to be worried about how something I post (say, a murder mystery) could suddenly put me on the FBI terrorist list and then, years down the road, I can't get the job I want. Think that doesn't happen? Think I'm blowing this out of proportion? I'm not so sure.
Maybe this will all blow over, people will forget. We'll all 'get over' it. Until the next time.
If it were me that was being tagged as a pedophile, I'd give serious consideration to suing. Yeah, me, the 'too many lawsuits in America' person is advocating this. Because your reputation, your life, is not a frivolous lawsuit. Having to carry that sort of tag is a burden I wouldn't wish on anyone.
I hope LJ makes it VERY clear that MOST of the journals they deleted should NEVER be referred to as 'pedophile journals' on ANY website EVER again. And many, many, many retractions should be made.
