...hydrogen and stupidity. And probably not in that order.

Awhile back I bought this cute magnet from the bargain bin at JoAnns - it has a cartoon pig and says 'oink'. When we were cleaning my craft room I found it and put it in the 'downstairs' pile ([livejournal.com profile] tjstein, this is proof it all actually made it downstairs! I brought it down a few days ago and folded all the towels, do I get a cookie?). It's basically a painted piece of balsa wood with a slice of magnet on the back, but it was only $0.25, and like I said, it was cute.

So I'm cleaning the kitchen and I try to stick it to the refrigerator. No go. Not even a *little* bit of stick. Okay... maybe the balsa wood is to heavy? If so, that would be the world's wimpiest magnet. But still. So I take a knife and pry the magnet off the back (yes, jabbing my hand and drawing blood in the process - I never said I wasn't part of the problem, now, did I?). Then I grab a sheet magnet and glue the plaque to it (it's still drying).

Curious, I pick up the 'magnet' that was glued to the back. I'm beginning to wonder if it is a magnet, so I try sticking it to the refrigerator with nothing attached - if it can't even hold its own weight, it's certainly not a magnet. *plop* - it falls right off. I don't know why I did this, but I flipped it over and stuck the glue side to the refrigerator... and, of course, it stuck.

Today's lesson... magnets? They have polarity. They only work one way.

(okay, it was funnier in my head, but at least you can chuckle over me stabbing myself in the hand, right?)

you should get some of those rare-earth magnets, slap a piggy on one of those. you can stick it to your 'fridge, by placing it on the back wall of your house

I could support a real pig on the side of my house!

Those magnets are amazing, but frightening, too. That's a lot of force, and it can do some damage!

That's a very good, if depressing, point. :/
