Oh, LJ, you know you're in deep when even the folks over at otf_wank spend most of their time commenting on your problems (miscommunication, lying, and all-around bad policies) than they do on actual wanking.
This is truly, truly, truly turning into a failure of epic proportions.
We have outright contradictions. We have what appear to be double standards. We have stupidity and failure coming out the whazoo (which, yes, if you're wondering is fairly uncomfortable, yet oddly enjoyable...). What we still don't have? Answers!
You know, there's one thing - one really easy thing - LJ needs to do right off the bat. Stop allowing members of the support team to respond to comments on their own. They are not only making a huge muddle of things, but are directly contradicting each other and previous statements made by LJ representatives. Designate a person (yes, even if it's a sockpuppet 'ljstaff' person, that works nicely) and have that person understand what is going on (good luck there) and have them AND ONLY THEM respond and represent LJ's position. Do not allow your staff to go off half-cocked (oh, the puns I could make here, but won't. must. resist. punnage.).
This is something I understand, working for the government. We're not allowed to make comments on legal issues and are legally prohibited from recommending the services of a company, as it would look like a City endorsement. It's not that hard a concept to understand and follow.
Also, require LJ staff/abuse members to have separate, unattached journals to represent their 'business' side. This protects you and them. I don't sign my professional letters 'Smeddley' nor do I advertise my real name/job title here. There should be boundaries between the two parts of your life. It's common sense.
And finally, there are at least two dozen really good questions being asked in the
lj_biz post. I'd say 90% of the main thread comments (up to page 15, I think that's where I stopped reading) bring up real points. Sometimes repeatedly. And most of these points are ignored. They are simple yes/no questions. Please stop answering with 'it depends'.
Two easy ones for you (that have been asked repeatedly and skirted or ignored):
Is a link to 'obscene' content a bannable offence? (eg, posting a link to the ponderosa121's picture)
If something is legal in the country of origin, but illegal in California, is that a bannable offence? And to what degree? (eg, I understand that posting a pic of a 20-year old in a compromising situation with a 16-year old, even if legal in that country, is probably a bannable offence, since you're pretty clear on the 'no minors in sexually suggestive pictures' rule. But what about that 20-year old writing about his experience with that 16-year old? Or writing about wanting to do things - legally - to that 16-year old? What about pics or descriptions of drug activity in Amsterdam?

I really need to stop looking at this stuff.
In other news, I checked a book out from the library today that shows me how to knit a cactus! :) *think happy thoughts, think happy thoughts*
