More pictoral evidence of my hoarding...

Okay, y'all thought I had a lot of yarn, eh? You might not want to click on the cut, then, because I like fabric a whole lot more than I like yarn...

But luckily, I can fit it into less pictures... because I'm lazy... and I wasn't ABOUT to take a picture of each piece of fabric I have! Remember, the goal is to reduce the volume by 1/2!

I'll ease you into it... This is a little bit of fabric I found peeking out of a plastic bin in the closet. I'm not sure what it is, or if I have any plans for it, but it was fabric.

And here's a plastic shoebox-thing that has fabric in it I picked out to make a penguin quilt!

This bin is a bit bigger, and holds the fish fabric for the fishbowl quilts...

And here are slightly large bins - the top is bug fabric for the bugs in a jar quilts, the bottom has all my puppy-themed fabrics in it.

And up to this point, you're probably thinking (unless you know me) 'well, this doesn't look too bad! In fact, if you just finish off the projects you've started, you'll be in good shape!' Sadly, this is where all my nice organization ends. And, if you are really ready for it, scroll down and behold the horror that is... my fabric shelves....

Are you sure you want to see this?

I mean, it's quite embarrassing for me to admit how much I have, you know. It's like... an illness, I just keep buying it.

Anyone want to come over and quilt with me, help me sort my fabric? You'd get a free quilt top out of it!

Okay, you win. Here it is:

Sadly, a lot of those shelves aren't even loosely piled, in many cases the fabric is forcibly *shoved* into every spare opening. My goal is to have ALL of my fabric organized into boxes and have it fit into ONE shelf. In a little under three years. *groan*

And if you are wondering, no, I cannot reach the top of those piles. I've resorted to throwing things up there.

That truly is frightening. I can't judge, though...you should see my books. They're taking over the house, and that's the only reason I've been able to compel myself to use the library once in a while.

Not to mention the movies and CD's.

So at least you're not alone with the hoarding issue...?

[identity profile] smeddley.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
We cataloged our books.

We have over 1,600 books.

I don't even remember how many CDs and DVDs we have, but... it's a lot. :/

My name is Smeddley and I have a 'stuff' problem...

And, yes, I should see your books! Post pictures! Make me feel better! :D

OMG you MUST take pix of your library.

I want to experience some book lust.

[identity profile] smeddley.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, at the moment a lot of them are still in boxes, because they were down in the basement, then the whole leak thing happened.

We plan on buying some new bookshelves this month, so after we get those delivered and set up I will take some pictures.

I do have an impressive shelf's worth in the bedroom, and my nightstand is PACKED with my to-read books...

...yeah, movers HATE us.

I'd come over and quilt with you if I could.

I'd learn how to do it that way, lol.

Wonderful collection of fabric.

[identity profile] smeddley.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really not hard, if you can use a sewing machine, you can quilt! I think most of the 'skill' is in picking out fabrics that go well together and finding a good pattern!

[identity profile] lyonza.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'd love to come help you quilt and sort, but you'd have to let me live there for the next three years at least ;) Otherwise it will be one hell of a commute.

Besides, I'm tall enough to reach the top of the shelves for you :D :D

[identity profile] smeddley.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
What, you can't just pop by for an afternoon? ;)

[identity profile] tjstein.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd definitely come over and help you sort your fabric. You and Carmen gave me some inspiration last week and spent the weekend cleaning and sorting through my craft room. So in a way, I owe ya!

[identity profile] smeddley.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. You were productive! I might just take you up on that offer! First, though, I need to clean off enough space on the floor for a person to stand... it's pretty bad right now, I just shifted loads of stuff and stood on other stuff to get those pictures!

[identity profile] tjstein.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm available Saturday.

[identity profile] smeddley.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
What time on Saturday? I'm going over to a friend's at 5-ish, a late (for her)/early (for my hubby) birthday celebration, but if you'd like to come over in the early afternoon... ?

The only down side is I really doubt I can foist any fabric off on you...

[identity profile] tjstein.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
My only plan was to go by Harper Fabrics for their class preview about 10am or so. How about after lunch?

You might be able to...I want to make a quilt sometime as part of my 100 in 1001 project. But I doubt that I'd make a dent in the overall stash.

Oh and I'm taller so I can help you stack things up high neatly!

That works for me! I *might* be up by then! ;)

I don't know if you have my address, I can 'message' it to you tonight. Along with my colorful directions...

[identity profile] tjstein.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Groovy. Send me your directions and phone number and I'll call when I'm on my way.

Sent using LJ's nifty messaging system. Woot!

[identity profile] icecat.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
HOLY CRAP WOMAN! You could practically start your own fabric store, haha. :D

How hard is it to make a quilt? I took a sewing class and sewed a little quilt bag, and man, if you're even off a little on one of the squares, it doesn't look right, and I'm anal enough to be annoyed by that.

[identity profile] icecat.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh and I could help sort too if you need it. :)

Organization is fun!

[identity profile] smeddley.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's very, very, very easy to quilt. If you're overly compulsive about things lining up, there are ways to ensure they do. You really can *pull* on the fabric to make sure the seams line up! And, of course, if you're consistent in cutting them and sew fairly straight, it really does line up pretty well.

Then again, there are a lot of quilt patterns you can make where it's very easy to make things look right (like the shelf variations of 'bugs in a jar' and 'fishbowl'). So picking a good pattern for your style is also very important!

Organization is more fun when it's at someone else's house, I think! I'd love t come work on your craft room, but looking at mine fills me with dread. Maybe I'm worried I'll die in an avalanche of fabric... ;)

[identity profile] mmmontserrat.livejournal.com 2008-01-09 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
oh my god.

that would take up half my house!

you have a nice collection... you could have fun fabric parties if you had a group to craft with!

(not that I do) LOL

[identity profile] smeddley.livejournal.com 2008-01-10 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that big! ;) But if I don't get it under control I fear it will actually take up half that room before long!
